About SHIKSHA Initiative

Shiv Nadar Foundation introduced SHIKSHA Initiative in 2012 to eradicate illiteracy from India by creating a model which is easily replicable, scalable and measurable. SHIKSHA Initiative works with the mission to create lifelong learners, by enhancing the learning process and utilizing a technology-enabled learning program. It attempts to overcome the existing educational challenges by introducing interactive content and periodic assessments, making the process of learning more interesting, fun and effective. Furthermore, it enhances the classroom environment and equips the teachers with an innovative high-engagement teaching mechanism to boost learning effectiveness and retention among children.

SHIKSHA firmly believes that technology has the potential of transforming education and improve learning among students as well as building the capacities of teacher. The programme is targeted at learners of grade 1 and 2 in government and private schools and is aimed at integrating the use of digital technologies in learning. The content is developed by education practitioners and includes interactive animations, cartoons, videos, audios and exercises aimed at helping students learn better. It supports subject knowledge and also ensure that technology-use enhances teaching and learning. Moreover, it has been widely recognized that fostering digital literacy in the classroom help children to diversify this experience and knowledge to make learning more relevant and purposeful. SHIKSHA Initiative doesn’t replace classroom training completely rather it complement conventional training in order to impact as many learners as possible. Thus, key to ensuring successful outcomes is to blend more traditional classroom approaches with e-learning approaches.

Furthermore, SHIKSHA Initiative has strategically extended into adult literacy approach entitled as SHIKSHA+ that uses an ICT based methodology to instill the fundamentals of reading, writing and arithmetic skills to illiterate adults who have not attended a formal school.

SHIKSHA MODEL

SHIKSHA Initiative uses these three steps to effectively educate students in the classroom in its mission to eradicate illiteracy. The foundation of the SHIKSHA Initiative rests on three distinct pillars:

  • Teaching – The entire curriculum of the U.P. board primary syllabus is converted into an interactive animated learning exercise. High-quality streamlined content is delivered to students through a basic and simple technology platform, learning aids and interactive sessions. Teaching sessions are conducted by the local teachers who are trained to use the technology. This is a simple technology and any teacher is capable of using this after basic training.

  • Querying – Querying and assessment is the second step of the process wherein the learning imparted to the students in the teaching phase is tested for evaluation. Querying helps understand the effectiveness of the learning process utilized and its effect on student understanding. The Assessment is conducted through in-class and after-class question and answer sessions, conducted face to face and individually for each student by their respective teachers.

  • Augmentation – The students who are found to be lagging behind in the assessment sessions are selected for special classes imparting deeper learning. These learning sessions are conducted by the same teachers to keep familiarity and same teaching style. These sessions provide better and detailed explanation of the same subject/content to the students for their learning and retention based on reports generated by the assessment process. We have realized that most of the students who need augmentation are those who were absent during the classes when that topic/chapter was taught.

Teaching Querying Augmentation
Lesson/Curriculum planning at the state level under the purview of existing teachers Based on continuous and comprehensive evaluation Selection of students based on absenteeism and performance
Video-based standardized course content to students Assessment through students’ performance management Done by the classroom teachers to retain familiarity and teaching style
In-video activities/exercises to increase student participation Assessment through tablets wherever possible to improve accuracy of the process Tested for an effective delivery through post-augmentation assessment
Post class student feedback system

SHIKSHA INITIATIVE

SHIKSHA Initiative is an accelerated technology-enabled literacy and enhanced learning program. It works through continuous intervention in primary education with a digital high-quality engaging content based on State Board syllabus and a technology-based mode of dissemination, to instill learning retention among children. It attempts to overcome the existing educational challenges by introducing interactive content and periodic assessments, making the process of learning more interesting, fun and effective.

The Bloomberg Media team visited one of the schools running SHIKSHA Initiative classroom in Nayagaon village of Sikandrabad block in Bulandshahar district on 7th October 2015 for a story they were doing on Shiv Nadar Foundation and its founder and chairman Mr. Shiv Nadar.
The team was taken through a running classroom where the teacher, Mr Sandeep Sharma, was using the digital classroom for teaching the students. Visits of MIT Media Labs, USA team – Tarana Gupta, Deb Roy and James Kondo, COO, Twitter on 07.11.2014 in 2 Government Primary schools in MahepaJagir, Sikandrabad

7th November 2014 was an eventful day for Shiksha initiative. We not only had a delegate from the Australian High Commission visiting us, but also had delegates from Massachussets Institute of Technology Media Labs, USA and the COO of Twitter Incvisiting us and getting a demonstration of the on ground delivery of Shiksha Initiative in government schools of rural Uttar Pradesh.
The visits were coordinated by the corporate outreach team and the PR team of Shiv Nadar Foundation respectively. Academic experts from Shiksha took the team to the schools and gave them a brief overview of the project as well as the modus operandi we are using to eradicate illiteracy from India one district at a time.
The delegates visited two government primary schools in the same village, MahepaJagir of Sikandrabad block in Bulandshahar district, where the teachers from Shiksha Initiative team are MrRamlakhan Shukla and MrSamod Kumar. They got a demonstration of the classes in progress in both the schools, where animated content being used to teach students in an effective and engaging manner in a rural setting within a not-so-rich-infrastructure wise school amazed them.
Since MIT Media Lab has team members trying to set up a social initiative in India, they were also keen to not only observe but also learn about the on ground delivery, the problems, challenges as well as the advantages. They interacted with the students, discussed with the teachers and also got an understanding of the pedagogy used, the scientific principles as well as rationale behind the content creation and the Bloomberg taxonomy used in the assessment process.
Mr James Kondo of Twitter was quite enthused on watching how technology was not only helping children but also getting them to understand the benefits of technology, which would help them get connected to the world at large in coming years. While the teachers also took out time to show them some activities performed in classroom to enhance learning and keep children interested, they also took feedbacks as well as interesting ideas from the esteemed visitors regarding the improvements in the delivery.
Mr Deb Roy had this feedback for RoshniNadar, the trustee of Shiv Nadar Foundation, “The convergence of our ideas around rural language learning for younger children mediated by networked smart phones really is amazing. After visiting a Shiksha school and meeting with Robin and his team, the compatibility of our plans feels natural. I am so excited about how all this could come together as a transformative force for children’s learning in India and beyond.”

Visit of Ms. Prerna from the Australian High Commission in Government Primary school, Mahepa Jagir-1, Sikandrabad

The Australian High Commission has been taking a keen interest in the works of Shiv Nadar Foundation. They have also donated a significant amount of money for the higher education of students passing out from class 12 in VidyaGyan, which is a Shiv Nadar Foundation residential leadership academy for underprivileged but meritorious rural children from Uttar Pradesh.
Ms. Prerna from the Australian High Commission visited the Government Primary School in Mahepa Jagir village of Sikandrabad block in Bulandshahar district. At the school, she interacted with the SHIKSHA Initiative teacher, Mr. Samod Kumar on the modalities of content delivery and overall pedagogy and also watched a classroom session in progress.
She interacted with the students, watched them perform an education activity and also took their feedback of the classroom teaching, participation and the increase in interest and fun in learning after the ICT boost. She was quite enthused by the project delivery and the children’s responses and wished them well for their life ahead.
